RADIOLOGICAL SOURCE SECURITY INSPECTORS (RSSI) TRAINING, October 2018.


The Nigerian Nuclear regulatory Authority (NNRA) in partnership with the United Nations Department of State of Energy (USDOE) Office of Radiological Security (ORS) and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL) organized four-day training for regulators. The training took place from the 16th -19th October, 2018 at the Ladi Kwali Hall of the Sheraton hotel, Abuja.

The training was aimed at familiarizing regulatory inspectors on security of radioactive sources in order to address the challenges of security inspections. Representatives from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PPNL); Ms. JoAnn Archuleta, Mr. Russell Haffner and Mr. Micheal Henry were the resource persons for the training course.

Ms. JoAnn Archuleta speaking on behalf of the resources persons said they were honored to be in Nigeria to further strengthen the partnership in inspections and regulations of the nuclear security world. She also said that inspections were based on system, people, policies and team exercises even as they shared their various experiences.

The DG/CEO of NNRA, Prof. Lawrence Dim in his keynote address, thanked the resource persons for coming to Nigeria to train the NNRA inspectors on improving their inspection procedures. He invited them to explore the goodness and culture of Nigeria as two amongst them were visiting for the first time. He also emphasized the need for the participants to make good use of the opportunity given to them by the Authority through their show of commitments in ensuring compliance to best international practices in inspections.

During the closing ceremony, the facilitators thanked the NNRA for the invitation and commended the enthusiasm, dynamism and cooperation of all participants thereby making the meeting successful.

In the DG/CEO’s closing remark, he expressed excitement at the success of the program and urged participants to continue in the spirit of knowledge pursuit and share all they had learnt with their colleagues. He thanked the guest facilitators for the robust content and great relationship that the NNRA has enjoyed with the USA and particularly the DOE. Certificates were presented to all participants.

Meanwhile, a team from the US-DOE Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) paid a one day visit to the NNRA to help strengthen the Nuclear Security Detection Architecture (NSDA) and also as part of their mandates to build Capacity of Partnering countries in area of Deterrence, effective investigation on smuggling of Nuclear and Radiological Material that could be used for act of terrorism.

The Team Leader, Dr.Daniel Abeyta said he was pleased to be in Nigeria and reiterated the commitment of the US-DOE to always give support to the country through the NNRA in detecting radioactive sources and other areas of interest to ensure effective regulatory regime of radioactive materials.
