PILOT EXERCISE FOR TECHNICAL SWEEP TEAM ON THE USE OF RADIATION DETECTION EQUIPMENT. May 2019.


The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) on the 14th May began a 3-day Pilot Exercise for Technical Sweep Team on the Use of Radiation Detection Equipment at its Headquarters in Abuja. The training is organized to acquaint selected stakeholder and staff on how to conduct detection of nuclear and other radioactive material during technical sweeps. The exercise is scheduled to hold from 14th -16th May, 2019.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the NNRA Acting DG/CEO, Dr. Yau Usman Idris, represented by Prof. Timothy. C Akpa, General Manager, Radiological Safety department stated that it is pertinent to put necessary systems and measures in place to ensure that materials out of regulatory control are brought back under control.

 Explaining further, the representative of the DG affirmed plans to include radiation detection as part of the national technical sweep program, stating that it is an important measure in detecting materials out of regulatory control and will improve the overall nuclear security regime in the country.

Stakeholders present at the meeting include, representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).

Giving his vote of thanks, the Deputy General Manager, Nuclear Security Centre, (NSC) Mr. Adamu Abdul, on behalf of NNRA management stated that the programme is organized to ensure safety of facilities and elimination of threats.
