Workshop in Progress

A one week retreat on Self Assessment of Regulatory Infrastructure for Safety (SARIS) was organized by the Management of Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) in preparation for the IAEA organized Integration Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) Mission. The exercise took place from the 9th to 14th January 2017 at Keffi, Nasarawa State. The Heads of Departments and Units of the Authority participated in the retreat and provided answers to set of questions based in modules.

The exercise geared at assisting NNRA to assess its strength, weakness, opportunities and threats and thus identify the existing gaps in order to design a course for improvement in its activities and enhance its regulatory control over various Practices and Activities in Nigeria. The outcome of the IRRS Mission will ultimately assist in improving the performance of the Authority in the discharge of its duties.

The DG/CEO in his opening remarks welcomed participants to the retreat and urged them to dedicate themselves to the success of the SARIS exercise and stressed that the retreat was organized to ensure that Officers focus on the assignment for maximum benefit of the Authority and thus allotted time to the conclusion of the exercise.

The SARIS methodology and tools are designed by the IAEA to support States evaluate their national infrastructure for nuclear and radiological safety and is compatible with the Integrated Regulatory Review Services (IRRS) Mission guidelines. Nigeria is hosting the IRRS Mission in Abuja in the second quarter of 2017.
