The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) organized a three day National Workshop on International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) from 15th-17th of May, 2017 at Rockview Hotel, Abuja.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources ably represented by Dr. Isah Baba, Director Oil Services, DG/CEO NNRA, Prof. Lawrence Dim, IAEA experts; Mr. Mauri Rhiihonen (Finland), Mr. Stig Isaksson (Sweden), and Mr. Nicolas Delaunay (France), NNRA staff and other relevant stakeholders from various agencies were in attendance at the workshop.

The event was declared open by the representative of the Minister Dr. Isah Baba. In his remark, he welcomed every participant and commended the efforts of the IAEA Technical Experts in honoring the invite to the workshop. He urged every participant to see the workshop as an opportunity to enhance the physical security of all radioactive materials in Nigeria and the world at large. 

Speaking at the event, the DG/CEO NNRA in his opening remark intimated participants that the workshop was organized in preparation for a future IPPAS mission in Nigeria. According to him, this will assist in strengthening nuclear security regime and identify areas that needs physical security enhancement both at national and facility/activity level and during use, storage and transport of nuclear and other radioactive materials. The DG outlined the five major regulatory functions of the NNRA which includes radiation protection, safety and security of radiation sources, safeguard of nuclear materials and physical protection of nuclear installations. He reminded the audience that Nigeria has signed and ratified relevant International Conventions and Agreements to demonstrate its commitment to nuclear security and physical protection. He stated that this was one in the series that NNRA is organizing and appreciated the efforts of the IAEA in general in its relentless efforts to improve the physical security of all nuclear and radioactive materials.

Also speaking at the event, the IAEA team leader Mr. Mauri Rhiihonen applauded the efforts of NNRA for organizing such a workshop and said that IPPAS mission was to review state physical protection regime and security systems for nuclear and other radioactive material as well as assist member States and operators to implement requirements and recommendations based on international instruments and IAEA Nuclear Security Series (NSS) publications. He stressed that the IAEA is always ready to answer any call as regards physical protection and security in respect of Nuclear and other radioactive material in its member states. Presentations were made by IAEA Technical experts and NNRA resource persons.
